EA
[Empirical Assembly] [Executable Architecture] [Exposure Analysis] [Evolutionary Algorithm] [Equilibrated Aggregate] [Executive Assistant] [Enemy Aircraft] [Electro-Acoustic] [Electronic Arts] [Entertainment Associates] [common abbreviation for "each"] [Each & All]

EA is a photoelectroacoustic project instigated by André Gonçalves, Andy Graydon, Ben Owen, Gil Sansón, Richard Garet and Gill Arnò. While the interests and approaches of each member vary widely, everyone generally works within the idiom of computer-processed natural and instrumental sounds, and with the interrelation of the visual environment with the aural environment through slide, film and video projections.

Participation in the group is open and evolving, always incorporating new forms and dividing into smaller focused specialties. One facet of the group's dynamic is to define smaller performance ensembles -- duos, trios, etc -- from within the larger group for specific pieces. In keeping with this evolving paradigm, the acronym EA does not refer to any fixed phrase.

EA works with improvisations as well as with rules-based compositions written by individual members. Performances alternate between large group improvs and practiced compositions drawn from the group's repertoire, often played by smaller units of the group (Graydon).

w/ Ben Owen
Ben Owen and I have been working together since we met in 2001. After our first visual collaborations at Barreled, Broklyn Beats' monthly event at Subtonic, Ben and I kept working together on many projects involving sound, slide projections, video, installations and print.
Five cds listed in the Multiples section of this website have the two of us collaborating in duo or larger groups. One video/audio collaboration, S.Intro, is available in the Downloads section. In the Spring of 2006 Ben and I have started the project unframed to release recordings and other multiples, and the first three Fotofono events have all been produced collaboratively.

mpld + Esther B. - In this collaboration I join Montréal's found slides and vinyl cut-up mad surgeon Esther B. in a hilarious search-and-destroy quest aimed at one cherished classic suburban ritual - the family slideshow. After Kodak's announcement of the demise of its popular Carousel projectors, we feel that our tribute to this doomed medium is definitely due. A booklet will be published with the results of our long-distance game.

Little Strings (with Gil Sansón - tape recorders, contact microphones, laptop) Little Strings investigates perceptive subjectivity and obsolescence patterns. Recently outdated technologies are at the core of this research, while feedback, interference, distortion and other media artifacts are systematically integrated in the message.
The project is in fact itself currently obsolete, or rather depending on unreliable means since Gil was forced to relocate
to Caracas, Venezuela.
All we have left is an excerpt from a live performance at Nisus, dated May 26 05. It is available in the Downloads section of this website.

Criterion/mpld

La Ciudad was released in June 05 as an enhanced audio cd containing Criterion's ep and mpld's video that celebrated NYC's adrenalinic flow and its prolific multicultural collisions. This project came together after several years of touring together and collaborating on Crito's label Broklyn Beats, which I have art directed for years and for which I have designed many record covers and other identity materials.
One segment of the 20-minute piece is available in the Downloads section of this website.

Low Speed Dangeous
My girlfriend, graphic designer Theres Wegmann, and I were looking for a Christmas present that would unite our geographically distant friends and families. We decided to virtually bring them all to our beloved NYC's Chinatown, by way of a soundwalk cd and a booklet made of little colorful samples from the busy NYC neighborhood.
An edition of 50 cd-rs was made. The audio part is available in the Downloads section as an mp3 file, and some of the booklets' covers are on view in the Multiples section.

mpld vs. Ylyptyk
Mehmeti, Mehmeti is a collaboration with seminal illbient collective Byzar's Miguel Lopez, a.k.a. Ylyptyk. For this project, he intervened on a field recording that I made during a trip to Istanbul in 2000. The tense interplay between street noise and dreamy disembodied voices resolves in a thick, submerging drone field - an ideal place to get lost in. Originally produced for the first installment of the Seasonal Addenda audiovisual series, this little web project incorporates a flash slide show made with photographs that I shot with my friend Sonia Campagnola during the same East-bound trip.
