October 10, 2008
Campo, Chicago
Nervatura - an evening to present the audio-visual work produced during the residency at Campo.

"The sound and visual works presented in Nervatura are re-elaborations of the live experience of the environments where Gill has been immersed for the last week. The booklets are handmade by impressing objects found at the margin of several public spaces in Chicago, warmed up on the burning stove at home. The found sounds and imprinted traces of the objects are generated from the same unique experience of the urban environment.
Mixing his background of graphic design, visual art and sounds installation, Gill seeks to find the place and the moment where the aural, and visual experience share a generative event".

"Frequencies is an experiential and holistic exhibition which captures facets of the DIY community and extends outside the physical bounds of the gallery -- referencing both "public art" and "life as art" movements. It questions the artist-viewer vs. musician-audience relationships, and thus the cognitive division between visual art and music, gallery and rock venue".

OptoSonic Tea

Live sets by:

mpld (Gill Arno)
Luke DuBois

Invited artist:
Gerd Stern

OptoSonic Tea is a new regular series of meetings dedicated to the convergence of live visuals with live sound which focuses on the visual component. These presentation-and-discussion meetings aim to explore different forms of live visuals (live video, live film, live slide projection and their variations and combinations) and the different ways they can come into interaction with live audio. Each evening features two different live visual artists or groups of artists who each perform a set with the live sound artists of their choice. The presentations are followed by an informal discussion about the artists' practices over a cup of green tea. A third artist, from  previous generations of visualists or related fields, is invited specifically to participate in this discussion so as to create a dialogue between current and past practices and provide different perspectives on the present and the future.

Images Festival 2006
Toronto

mpld: Lapse Phasing

"The images phase into each other, creating a stunning, almost three dimensional visual phenomenon. Combined with the amplified and processed mechanical sounds of the projectors, Lapse Phasing draws the viewer into an almost transcendent space. The critical notions of the day may say that photography is a step towards the grave, but Arnò's project finds the image very much alive, re-animated in an ecstatic visual dance".

3.2_topographies
by EA: Richard Garet, Andy Graydon, Adam Kendall, Jeremy Slater, Gill Arno.

A new sound work for the 16-channel surround environment at the Issue Project Room. The piece was conceived and composed specifically for that space and speaker array to create a shifting series of aural perspectives and spatial compressions/expansions that the audience is encouraged to move around in and explore actively.
Four players, one spatial conductor/programmer. The sound spectrum is divided into four distinct bands, one player in each, all responding to the changes in spatialization to conjure new terrains from raw and processed field recordings.

December 3, 2005
Millennium Film Workshop - 66E 4th St. NY

BECOMING - An evening of media works by a diverse collection of artists working in experimental music, film, video and audiovisual performance.

Performances are focused on bringing talented improvisers together in unique combinations that allow them to explore visual-aural interactions. The show is organized into three “acts,” in an arc that constantly blends technologies, methodologies, and processes. Within each act individual performances run together seamlessly, encouraging a broader cooperation and improvisation between artists who may never have worked together before. Pre-cinematic forms may blend with electronic sound, then interact with live film performance, musique concrete, and video mixing along way. The show presents a spectrum of practices that, while drawing on different traditions, are all current, vibrant, and collaborative across genre.

ACT 1 - ADAM KENDALL: Live Video Mix, VORTEX (SATOSHI TAKEISHI & SHOKO NAGAI): Music, TIANNA KENNEDY: Cello & Effects, KENNY WOLLESON: Percussion, FRANCOIS BOUE: Dual Film Projection, NICEDISC (JEFF PASH & NICK PHILLIPS): Live Video & Electronic Sound.

ACT 2 - KENNETH KIRSCHNER: Piano, SAWAKO: Field Recordings & Processing, MARIE LOSIER: Shadow Play, JOEL SCHLEMOWITZ: Glass Slide Projection, Bradley Eros: Shadow Play & Live Film Performance, ANDY GRAYDON: Live Video Reprocessing, AMNON WOLMAN: CLOCK PIECE.

ACT 3 - ZACH LAYTON: Electronic Sound, CHIKA: Live Video Mixing, BRUCE McCLURE: Live Film Performance, EA (BEN OWEN, RICHARD GARET & GILL ARNO): Live Audio Processing.

August 6 2005
Galería Galou presents:

m/M [micro/MACRO]: EA's six hour continuous installation-performance, in the gallery's space and its surroundings.

As computers keep offering us the ability to play with numbers in increasingly complex ways, our perception of proportional relationships is being exponentially challenged. We begin to realize our involvement in a ubiquitous hyper-game where reality fades into its own representation. Even time is no longer regarded as an absolute parameter to which safely anchor ourselves. With the realization of these ever-shifting dynamics comes the desire to take on an active role and to start interacting with the idea of relative magnitude, and with the way in which we perceive proportions. Microphones and amplifiers, optical lenses and projectors are some of the instruments that make it possible for us to monitor, analyze and redefine ourselves within our environment. Such technical tools, as well as philosophical hypotheses, are abundant and allow us a wide range of exploratory possibilities.
This exploration is the scope of m/M, EA's installation/performance in Williamsburg's Galeria Galou and its surroundings. During six hours, sounds and images will be collected from near and far, processed and re-presented in our first attempt to formally engage with the fluctuating interface that lies between the micro-bound and the macro-bound. An empirical test bench equipped with various electronic devices will be installed inside the snug space of the gallery. Its function will be to collect and process the sensorial information and to send it back to the outside world - the gallery's bare industrial surroundings and further on, eventually reaching EA member André Goncalves who will participate to the event via Internet connection from Lisbon, Portugal. Guest sound artist Brendan Murray, visiting from Boston, will provide yet another "outside perspective" to be internalized in the performance. Rather than a specific sound or an image, EA's piece will be constituted by the whole machine/environment. m/M is the whole functional apparatus designed to create dimensional loops and to attempt a short-circuiting of the conceptual extremities of inward and outward subjective planes. Passers-by will be attracted to the core of the performance space, and encouraged to participate in this empirical and expansive process.

STUBBLEFIELD'S BLACK BOX:
AN INTRICATE GAME OF POSITION
Event curated by Tianna Kennedy.
Participants include (among others): Tianna Kennedy, Damian Catera, mpld.

"In this exercise, Kennedy hopes to demonstrate that sound will always be a practice as well as a representation.  Kennedy is interested in furthering the idea of a praxical transmission, which would occasion vast networks of communication and participation and which would be inextricably bound up with uniqueness, plurality and action. Tianna hopes that by participating in this game we are in some small way participating in the deconstruction of the dominant one-way-broadcast radio paradigm, because we are no longer listeners, but actors in the performance. She also hopes to promote a non-hierarchic/distributed approach to art (and politics) making, and to generate a small space of camaraderie in an environment of complexity and disequilibrium".
